Adding fruit to block ice question and re syrup

Postby karleriknorski » Wed May 04, 2011 12:12 pm

Hi, just received my Fuji711 for home use and a shaved ice newbie :-)
Additive Question (sorry for missing this in topic if already covered), is it possible to add fruit/berries or maybe even a SnickersBar (healthy out the window for me) to the block ice mould before freezing, or will such additives in ice block make the shaving difficult/jam the machine? Anyone tried or doing this, or shouldnt I waste my time with these ideas and keep the block ice water only to avoid early creative frustration?
Syrup Question, I live in Norway so not many shaved ice parlours (other than slushys from convenience stores etc) or suppliers of shaved ice syrup around. As it will be expensive to import syrup to Norway (shipping cost/food safety etc) and my wife is already pi..ed of with me for having the 711 fedexed over, is Sodastream syrup's an option, coffee syrups?
Thx. Rgs, KE

Since u live so far and worried about shipping cost. I would stray away from experimentation. You don't want to ruin your blade and have to order a new one. I have not seen anybody freeze fruits in it. But I have seen shave ice with mixed fruit on top and drenched with sweetened condensed milk! Yum!

Sorry I have never seen Sodastream syrups or used coffee syrups.

Surprise ur wifey with a nice cool shave ice on a very hot day and all will be forgiven....I hope ;)

Hi Kianakai,
Thanks for responding, will definately try the fruit/condensed milk combo, picked up in other post the idea of adding a little syrup to condensed milk as well.

I thought a little ahead and ordered x4 extra blades + additional cranck to avoid any dissapointing moments in future ;-) I am guessing that a blade will last me for ages as I am not doing anything commercial, just home use or letting friends borrow for their kids parties.

Re the wife.... after not being to impressed when I showed her the machine on arrival, has been converted after experiencing the machine in action with the iceblock. So much so she already started talking about setting up an iceshave business :-) very funny. My two girls (twins 5yrs) loved the shaved ice experience.

@ KE...I think you may have your niche there in Norway.....You may be the first provider of Shave Ice in your area.....start out by doing birthday parties....Try doing it for free for a friend's party and then pass out business cards to their guests who maybe interested. It is always a hit with the kids!.....They will devour them cup after cup!......Since you have a manual shaver, maybe you can have the kids crank it or your wife can, while you catch the ice and shape it.
