Mochi Poll

Postby shaveicelove » Wed Oct 19, 2011 6:29 am

Aloha everyone! I just wanted to take an informal poll about mochi. If you wouldn't mind, I would love to hear any feedback on the following:

1. Do you offer mochi as a topping?
2. Where is your business's general geographical location?
3. Would you say that the mochi sells poorly, well, or extremely well?
4. Do you see a growing awareness and request for mochi?
5. Do you purchase or make your own mochi? If you purchase it, where do you purchase it from?

Mahalo everyone, I look forward to hearing your responses. A hui hou!

1. Yes
2. Southern California
3. varies....We have a mixture of different nationalities. At the farmer's market where I sell, only people who have had it or tried it before will buy and rarely do we get any newbies to try it (they do not want to pay extra for it). But at catered private events or parties, I'm amazed how much people would try it (cuz it's free!) even azuki beans.
4. There is a growing awareness because I do see it in Yogurtland and I also offer it to show people what they are missing. But I do make a small batch when I am at the market until I get a huge demand for it.
5. I make my own...trial and error...learned from youtube...want the recipe? easy.....I have actually made flavored mochi (green tea, strawberry, coconut) using the concentrates from HTK.

I'm hungry now.....

Yeps! Its fairly easy to make mochi, aside from the pounding. Buy one of those mochi making machines and they do most of the job for you. All you have to do is roll and cut!

1. Do you offer mochi as a topping? YES
2. Where is your business's general geographical location? NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
3. Would you say that the mochi sells poorly, well, or extremely well? WE'RE JUST STARTING OUT BUT I'M SURPRISED AT HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE ORDERED IT. NOT POOR...NOT WELL...I'D SAY OK.
4. Do you see a growing awareness and request for mochi? YES. I ALWAYS OFFER A SAMPLE WHEN SOMEONE ASKS WHAT IT IS.
5. Do you purchase or make your own mochi? If you purchase it, where do you purchase it from? I PURCHASE IT, BUT ITS NOT MY FAVORITE. ALTHOUGH CUSTOMERS SEEM TO LIKE IT. WE LOVE MOCHI SO I BOUGHT ONE OF THE MACHINES CAPITALIST MENTIONED. FAILED ALL 3 TIMES I TRIED. I'M SURE IT'S OPERATOR ERROR BUT I CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT.

SOOOO,IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN PURCHASING A MOCHI MAKER SHOOT ME AN EMAIL :D

Wonderful feedback! That's great that you have some interest in it, even if you're just starting out. I'd think the interest will only grow :) There is a pretty good brand that I've found which is sold at Costco Business Centers, perhaps you will have better luck with that one? Hope to make it to Northern California to try you folks out! ALOHA

Mochi are a great addition to you shave ice if you know how to make it properly. I have seen the old ways in Japan where they would pound the mochi with a mallet over and over again to produce the texture. However I don't think much people do that now days since it is way too labor intensive. I would agree that a simple mochi machine would do the trick if you don't plan to sell alot. I have also seen on youtube where there are these automated mochi cutters and rollers that can make thousands a day.
