Organic Syrups - Sources?

Postby spacemoderne » Wed May 11, 2011 7:42 pm

Hi, I'm new to the forum and am just putting together my business strategy. I live in Baltimore, Maryland and have decided that I'm going to give the 'ol Maryland "Sno-ball" a good run for her money! We all know that Hawaiian Shave Ice is a much finer, superior product than the chunky ice sno-ball (snow ball) ice. I'm going to be using Organic Syrups and bio-degradable paper goods, etc. I can only find one distributer that sells organic syrup (Nature's Flavors). Can anyone else recommend another syrup company that is organic and specifically for Shave Ice and Snow Cones? I've searched and searched on the Web but no such luck. Any help would be appreciated. Mahalo!!!

Hi,
I did Natures Flavors organic syrups for one summer of business with a Fujimarca block shaver. Their the only organic ones I know of. I did find some organic syrups that were used to make italian sodas but they were way too sweet and didn't work.

The Natures Flavors syrups tase really good but the obvious problem is the viscosity. I was pouring it straight on and you have to do it in 2 layers because if you pour it all on the top it won't even all go to the bottom because of the thickness. This can be a pain. I've heard about others thinning it out with water but I don't think diluting will help much.

Anyways, this time around im thinking of going with flavors from HTK Hawaii until I find a good Organic brand, maybe i'll try to make some myself who knows. I also use bio degradable cups, but can't find spoon straws in compostable. Let me know how things go for you, best of luck!

Organic is a very vague term. It's not heavily control and many people defines it differently. For the organic searchers out there, please be sure you know what you're looking at! I've spoken with one of our flavor specialists and was told that organic syrup is not impossible to do but it's not feasible. The cost for organic is much higher and its self life is much shorter. Aside from that, organic made flavors are colorless. These are the main reasons why you don't see much around. If your "organic" syrup can sit on your shelf for over 1 week, then it is most likely not organic. If your "organic" syrup has vibrant colors then you know it's not organic. Colors are artificial additives so how can that be organic?
