Some shave ice toppings that you can offer

Postby ShaveIce² » Sat Apr 17, 2010 2:57 am

Here are some popular local toppings that people use for their shave ice. Don't let the asian words alarm you! What we have here is some of the best in terms of taste and quality throughout Asia.

The most popular here is the "sno cap", which is pretty much standard condensed milk. However, there are several grades and types of condensed milk. What we carry is a thicker and much richer one as opposed to the regular Carnation ones you see in the supermarket. It also hails to be one of the "best" condensed milk brands in Asia.

This here is a popular local add on. This is li hing mui powder which is a powdered form of a preserved seed. Very popular here in Hawaii, it gives a sweet and sour like taste to the shave ice. Perfect unique blend and one of my personal favorites when used with li hing flavored syrup.

This next popular local favorite is the azuki bean or the red bean. Usually, red beans need to be cooked and sweetened before serving, but we offer a "user friendly" way where you would not have to go through the hours of cooking. This canned form of the azuki bean is preserved and contains real azuki beans and syrup. It is sweetened and ready for you to open up and serve.

For the snow cap, do you just pour it on top? Do you add anything else to the condensed milk? I tried it for the first time on our last visit back and it was so yummy!

I did not know there was several grades and types.....The brand "Swallow" is the best out there? Gotta check out my Asian stores.....I did not know there would be any differences in any of the canned sweetened condensed milk.
We add a liitle bit of water to thin it out a little....it is just too thick to pour.

I have heard of adding a little simple syrup to it to thin it out which is probably better than water.

The Swallow brand is one of the best brands that is used in Taiwan. Condensed milk is heavily used in Asia as a topping in addition to adding fruits, tapiocas, mochi, etc. We had a lot of compliments on it which is why we continued to offer it.

Here in So Cal people are not famliliar with putting "sweetened condensed milk" on their shave ice. How else can you offer it? We tried have tried saying "Snow Cap" or "sweet cream" but they always ask "What is that?" and then I have to tell them. Some people just don't know what they are missing.... :)

When people ask what is Sno Cap, I just tell them "it is something that you would love on your shave ice, don't worry about it unless you are allergic to dairy." Haha..

Ive seen some other shave ice companies mix together their own combinations of condensed milks, sugar, and complimenting syrup to make their own special blend of snow caps, to areas that dont know it as well it sells better if you just call it a special cream, plus then you can charge more for it haha

In Georgia no one is familiar with these type of toppings except a rare Hawaiian native or two that I meet over here. People in Ga just like their shaved ice straight up with no toppings.
