How do you make your ice block flat and even?

Postby Cathy » Sat Aug 27, 2011 2:54 pm

Hi!
When I freeze buckets of ice, the top is so uneven and crumbly. The theeth on the machine can't get a grip and the block wobbles too much. Should I try a square mold?
Thanks in advance :)

By the wY, I cannot find block ice in my town to save my life! The only exception is an ice sculpting place that will sell me a 250 pound block! Guess I need a new chainsaw!

Did you try using an ice pick to round it of as much as you can before putting into your machine? Or flipping it around so you can shave off the uneven first so it will even out?

Secondly, are these solid blocks or clear blocks? You will be paying a lot more for clear blocks if thats the case..they are a lot more difficult to make too.

No, I haven't tried the ice pick. I just bought a new freezer at Costco, and I hope it will freeze at a slower rate. The solid blocks are for ice sculpting, so they are crystal clear. $85 for 200 lbs

Load it into the machine with the flattest side up. It's better to have it uneven on the bottom, After you shave off a the first cup it will be fine. if it continues to wobble after the first cup flip it over again. also don't keep opening the freezer until the ice is completely frozen. the constant temperature change makes for uneven ice.
