Ice "Shaper"

Has anyone used an ice "shaper" before?

And do they work?

Is this what you are talking about? If it is, I would say that this for the "lazy", I hate to say that, but it really for people who just want to make a quick , presentable shave ice. I've learned from a lot of good shave ice stores, where they mostly use their hands and nothing more to shape the ice. This way the pressure applied is just right through experience where they can maintain the best quality possible and yet create a good appearance. Never had any complaints on that part, although you truly need to master it. I had once go with the so called "Ice Shaper" route , it was quick and effective. But , I realized the quality is just not as good as if it was formed using my hands as a shaping tool. Everyone's got a difference of opinion so it's just my two cents on this.

Thanks for the input IceMan. I just sold my Snowie kiosk and had a Snowie 3000 shaver (couldn't get approved by the L.A. County Health Dept.), so I never had to do any of the ice shaping. I will obviously have to learn how to be an artist and shape my own ice by hand. Maybe I should think about it if I do any 'big" events. Again, thanks for the two cents!

Agree with DFL. The metal molders are not that great since stainless steel tends to make the ice "sticky" and doesn't really smooth it out. I would use circular plastic funnels for it. I have also heard customers using those liter soda bottles and cutting the circular top off. It worked great!

It is a "lazy" way but I had to use one (a funnel) cuz of long lines. Just have to be careful not to pack it too hard. After a while, you will get the hang of it and how much pressure to use. I shave my ice high, shape the sides by hand, and pack it down slightly with a rounded funnel.
I lost my funnel one day and my wife found a rounded plastic bowl that worked even better.....experiment! and practice ...practice...practice....

Have fun!
